From Pony Racing to International Jockey.

Earlier this year we had the privilege of sitting down with international jockey Tom Marquand. Tom has completed a few stints here in Australia, his most recent trip being his most successful yet when winning the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes aboard the Haggas trained Addeybb.

The Thoroughbred Network wanted to get to know Tom and where his love for Thoroughbred Racing started. The answer was Pony Racing.

Pony Racing has been formally in existence for less than a decade and has been remarkably successful in achieving what it set out to do. Essentially, the Pony Racing Authority is today reaching out beyond racing’s normal parish to attract potential jockeys from less likely audiences. The sport is now 10 years old and has provided an education for many professional and amateur jockeys. In 2017 185 jockeys holding a BHA licence to ride or a Rider Certificate started in pony racing.

Tom discusses his development from pony racing to getting his apprentice license with one of the UK's leading stables. He takes us through his career so far and his thoughts on thoroughbred racing around the world. You can find Tom's Podcast on iTunes, Spotify & Google Play or you can watch it on youtube via the link below.
